#Strawberries. My hill of strawberries is in its second year. This spring, I re-planted every plant on a little hill of compost and covered the ground all around them with large mesh chicken wire. That kept my garden chickens from scratching up the plants. It was so cold and wet for so long this spring that the first flush of berries was half pollinated at best - just a mess of gnarly, seedy, not very sweet things. The chickens, the wild birds, the slugs and I didn’t care at all, and we battled it out for the best berries. I started putting chicken wire cones over the plants as the berries got ripe, but that only stopped the chickens - the wild birds find the gaps!
Big ups to the two nests of paper wasps living under the siding by the hose bib: the ladies pollinated those first berries when nothing else was awake to do it.
All of my plants are ever bearing. I didn’t get any more berries until *August,* because I got really zealous trimming the runners. It turns out that the flower stalks look exactly like runners for a very long time. Don’t do what I did. You’ll be so sad.
Despite having so many strawberry plants I had to give two dozen away this spring for lack of space, I ordered four more. They’re *specimens!* They’re *special!* Two of them are Marshall plants, supposed to be exquisite, and the other two are supposed to taste like raspberries.
I didn’t have anywhere to put them - see above, re giving away strawberries - so I put them in a new raised bed near the other berries. None of the new plants managed to make fruit, but they’ve survived and thrown out runners and I’ve got high hopes for next year.
Earlier this summer, I started a batch of the miniature Alpine strawberries from seed. They grew endearingly fast, and now they’re all transplanted out to their permanent homes and even blooming. The house came with an empty strawberry planter, so I filled it up and planted a few more with it in the front yard. And I’ve got a wired, raised bed with a healthy blueberry and a dying blueberry, and I gave them the remaining Alpine strawberries.

I’m not very pleased with these #blueberry bushes. Ok, fine, their soil is not great - lots of locked up nitrogen, mushrooms all spring - but it’s decomposing nicely and I expect them to take off next year. I am putting you on notice, blueberries.
I gave them the extra Alpine #strawberries from a strawberry-planter I made. I have a patch of alpine strawberries that I planted last year in a really dumb spot - they’re very productive and very tasty, but I just can’t crawl around to harvest them. I should be able to manage it in a raised bed, even a short one!
And I planted cucumbers in the same bed as the third blueberry bush. As you can see, it hasn’t gone as I intended (majestic little bush surrounded by short, well behaved vines that cascade out of the bed into the surrounding pathways, so idyllic!). Turns out chickens love cucumbers, and cucumbers that aren’t allowed to escape their bed just seethe into a fury that drowns all non cucurbits. I’m sorry, blueberry. Hang in there. I’ve learned my lesson.
Another painful lesson I’ve learned: the new flower shoots on strawberries look *exactly* like runner shoots. Don’t take up the habit of clipping all the shoots every morning or you won’t get more berries on your everbearers. D’oh.

First #hydroponic #strawberries. These have not been very successful, I think I missed the season. Sounds like they also prefer more oxygen in their hydroponic solution than the #Kratky bucket method provides - probably a #DWC system would be more appropriate. #gardening

I’ve figured out where to grow #lettuce: this bed. This is the place where the lettuce thrives. Got it!
I finally went to check on the little waist high fruit tree that’s just outside of the lower garden gate. Imagine my shock to realize it’s not a pear, it’s an #apple tree! There are *five apples* ripening on it!
The three Roma #tomato plants are setting loads and loads of fruit. A few of the other indeterminate main season tomatoes are starting to ripen, too. Soon I’ll have brag pics of colorful heirlooms! ☺️
And the miniature alpine #strawberries i grew and transplanted to the front porch yard are doing great! I got the donkey planter in California, but the pottery strawberry planter was here when we bought the house. I don’t think those things are big enough for regular strawberries to really be happy in them. But mini strawberries should be perfect!
I grew them from seed and of course there were extras. I put those down in one of the blueberry raised beds. These alpine strawberries make such tasty fruit, but it’s not worth spending time all the way down on the ground picking the patch growing with the asparagus. Im hoping that the ones in the raised bed and in these containers will be easier on the body for me to pick!
