Streaks encourage perfectionism, and undervalues the progressive nature of growth. The goal of any good habit is not to do it every single day, but to do *more* of it over time.
Streaks punish you for missing a day by throwing out all your accumulated progress so far—back to zero you go!—even if you have a perfectly wise reason to miss a day’s session. The loss of all your “progress” can be devastating, and people may do damage to themselves solely to keep a streak going.
Stop using streaks in your apps. Use a different metric that encourages *growth*, not *perfection*. Try a trailing tally with a target band instead (you did the activity 25 days out of the past 30! Good job!), or let your users view their progress on a calendar without any metric at all, and let them judge for themselves how well they did.

30 followers · 523 posts · Server home.socialI've been using #Streaks for ages and while it is still a great app I have become frustrated with the whole concept of it and other #HabitTracking apps. The moment I miss a goal, that whole progress is lost. What would be more motivating to me is some kind of success-rate indicator that lets me catch up again instead of starting from the bottom.
So my question is, do these apps exist? If not, I hope some indie dev who is looking for ideas for a new project might pick up on it.

🌏 🌊 I am an Earth/climate scientist at the University of Arizona in #Tucson (southwestern US) focusing on the areas of #climate change, #paleoclimates, and #paleoceanography, with an emphasis on #ENSO, #monsoons, & #variability.
⚗️🐚 Our group uses #inorganic #geochemistry incl. measurements of #stableisotopes & #tracemetals in #carbonate rocks & #fossils (e.g., #foraminifera, #mollusks, & #speleothems) alongside climate #observations as well as #simulations to advance understanding of how the Earth's #climate & #oceans have changed in the past and can change in the future.
Some of my hobbies include:
🎵 #music: I am a fan of #metal and heavy music of all sorts, but tend to migrate towards #black, #death, #doom, #drone, #sludge, & #thrash. I also have a soft spot for #carnatic/#hindustani #ragas, #darkambient, oldschool-ish #hiphop, #triphop, and various forms of #electronicmusic.
🦜 #birds & #birding #photography bring me joy. Right now, I feel v lucky to be briefly back in my hometown of #Bengaluru, southern India, after three long years being able to see #oldworld birds I grew up with.
👨🏾💻 #GTD, #mindfulness, #organization, and (vs?) #producivity are things that I enjoy thinking about. Of late, I've been using #Things3, #Streaks, #Hobonichi w a #Lamy Safari, #Obsidian, #Overleaf, & #Bookends to get things done.
