Reallocating street space to outdoor dining from private car storage is one of the best things NYC has done over the last few years, and it would be so sad to see it go.
The program definitely needs some TLC on the regulation side, particularly some fire code attention and some clear sidewalk/bike lane guarantees, but forcing tear downs after each summer will kill the program for much of the city

If your city isn’t embracing the PERMANENT post-pandemic transformation of streets as places for outdoor seating & cafes (aka #Streeteries) then your city hasn’t yet learned one of the most important lessons for better streets & cities. Montreal is a city that REALLY understands.

Can someone out there in the #philly fediverse explain to me a legitimate reason why the city would nix heaters and a bunch of the common building materials being used for streeteries?
Why does it always feel like the city hates every little nice thing that people enjoy? Feels like the city’s leadership is constantly guarded, grumpy, and spiteful towards the stuff that makes people happy.
