Just rewatched the excellent 1968 bbc version of Whistle and I'll Come to You. The sound design for the entire piece is stunningly done, but the dream sequence in particular reminded me of how much you can convey with good sound design:

I watched Peter Strickland's In Fabric earlier this week and again, sound seemed to be key to the movie.
