What I do:

Math: I am a PhD student in mathematical physics. In particular I study mirror symmetry and it’s applications in string theory (see arxiv.org/abs/2212.11906). My favorite shapes are the ~ half a billion (473,800,776) toric varieties defined by 4 dimensional reflexive polytopes. I explore the consequences of mirror symmetry beyond this reflexive setting.

Seems like the same idea as or . A hypothesized non-observable that fills in the negative space; responding questions, problems, needs created by the observables? Every model is wrong (including common conceptions of the divine) but some models are useful. (I forget who I'm quoting there).

@arstechnica what do you call a theory with no predictions that can be measured or observed in the known universe? Some people would say that does not represent failure. Lots of people believe in an omniscient deity, and nobody calls religion a failure.
