Useless quote for 1 May:
"You know why you don’t work 18 hours a day? Because four guys in Chicago [died] back in 1886. It’s called the Haymarket Affair. They were hanged for you, for the eight-hour day."

Markets are a value-agnostic resource allocation & exploitation system. If society prefers not to treat humans as resources to be allocated & exploited, then it needs to impose constraints on how markets work. That's regulations. Value alignment, if you will.

On the Right and medical quackery
I'm listening to a 1978 interview of Susan Sontag by Studs Terkel on the topic of Illness as Metaphor.
At 39 minutes, Sontag notes that the extreme right has long been occupied by medical quackery:
"Laetril has very much been taken up by the John Birch Society."
She and Studs also talk about the morality and moralisation of illness, notably (at the time) TB and cancer.
