This week's #stupa is #DhamekStupa located in #Sarnath, outside of #Varanasi. It is believed to be built on the location of the #Buddha's first sermon, the #DhammacakkappavattanaSutta.

The stupas at Sanchi are far from all of the other main pilgrimage sites. It is also very special because of the very high quality, still intact carvings located all around the #stupa complex.

The gateways are the most distinctive feature that can help you recognize this stupa.

A #stupa, or #cetiya, is a fancy memorial structure built to hold relics of #Buddhas or #Arahants. This is common across all forms of #Buddhism.

Today's stupa is #Mirisawetiya stupa in #Anuradhapura, #SriLanka. Like many stupas, this one was built by a #Buddhist king. Read more on Wikipedia:
