@mliv I feel lucky I haven’t seen too much toxic behavior on here. A little but not too much. Out of thousands of interactions, I’ve seen one pro gun person, I’ve only been told my thoughts are stupid once (yesterday), and I watched some folks tell a Kiev reporter how to report on the war so it wouldn’t hurt their feelings. Every other interaction has been quite nice. So I see a lot of potential in this platform that I never saw on Facebook or Reddit (never used #StupidBirdsite so I don’t know).

I’m needing help navigating this new social media, and I know I can’t be the only one. I haven’t used social media in years, and frankly only created this profile in support of decentralizing #StupidBirdsite as a valuable tool for disseminating information. And now I like it. I recently moved internationally, repatriating to my country of birth and haven’t made that many connections here, which is normal because I often hermit in the woods. So this accidental encounter with social media has been really great. But….I don’t know how to use this. I joined this (and forgive me if I’m wrong), instance because it seemed to bend towards alternative takes and seemed left leaning. And I often like discussing socio-political topics. But I also want to post pictures of gardens, food, trails and random things that really aren’t political in nature. Can someone help me find a resource that talks about how to properly use mastodon? I use to be pretty tech savvy and then went off into the woods a decade ago and basically, I’m glad I still remember how to type.
