@Npars01
Thank you. I agree, these are widespread impacts where the aquifer has unconsolidated sediments e.g. those found in river flood plains.

In southwest Western Australia the rocks are lithified (but only just, they were previously sand dune and only turned to rock in the last 100,000s of years) and as the is lowered, I don't think we'll see much .

There's very little natural too, as that is normally associated with organic sediments in alluvial (river) aquifers, and the coastal limestone is very pure.

Rampant Groundwater Pumping Has Changed the Tilt of Earth’s Axis

“ • Earth's pole has drifted toward 64.16°E at a speed of 4.36 cm/yr during 1993–2010 due to groundwater depletion and resulting sea level rise

• Including groundwater depletion effects, the estimated drift of Earth's rotational pole agrees remarkably well with observations…”

"Like many coastal cities around the world, New York City is sinking. On a year-to-year basis, the rate of its descent into the Earth is practically imperceptible, but over time those millimeters add up: Today, the city is 9 inches lower than it was in 1950 — a number that has serious implications for waterfront neighborhoods that are having to reckon with increasingly extreme storms."

"New York City is sinking in part due to the extraordinary weight of its vertiginous buildings, worsening the flooding threat posed to the metropolis from the rising seas, new research has found.

The Big Apple may be the city that never sleeps but it is a city that certainly sinks, subsiding by approximately 1-2mm each year on average, with some areas of New York City plunging at double this rate, according to researchers."

So after my plea to the insurance company to make a decision finally someone has! So we now have to wait til the back end of this year to be moved out for up to 12 months while they fix our house. Nice to have some kind of timelines at last!

In oil production, refineries pull huge amounts of water from underground aquifers. Over time, this extraction causes subsidence, hollowing out the land so much that it begins to collapse and sink into itself. Read this week’s newsletter featuring a new essay by Lacy M. Johnson. mailchi.mp/emergencemagazine/h Photo by Linda Murdock.

IF you keep pumping out the water that your land rests on, and you don't replenish it because you won't allow the land to flood, the will get you; only makes the process faster.

This happens in most deltas by the way: Mississippi delta, Rhine delta, Nile delta, you name it. And many Indonesian deltas. Think Jakarta.

So we are in a challenging position just now. The work to fix our house might now cost more than the value of our house. So we are waiting on a decision from the insurance company on whether they proceed or buy us out. It's hard to know what's best to do to resolve this

I'm wondering whether to blog about our issues since apparently we are in the 5% of cases that are severe enough to require in the UK. Though it seems that as a result of climate change cases of subsidence are increasing. Its been 3 years now and we are only just starting to make progress. I think some folk might be interested in our experience..

Surveyor has been. The whole internal structure of the house is being knocked down so we might be able to go for a redesign
