One bonus to using #mastodon over Twitter or FB is that it's not blocked on the school district wifi 🙃

So far I haven't seen any students surreptitiously using it, but it's convenient for me. If I did see a kid on it, I'd probably high five them (and then get them back on track.)

In the middle school class I covered this morning, these two girls started shouting in Spanish. I'm not sure what it was about, but I recognized "pendeja." Then they started fighting, and I mean really going at it. Since subs aren't supposed to break up fights, I called the office, and they were pissed, especially when one kid's recording (for TikTok) showed others egging the girls on.

💥 I subbed in 5th grade today. The first thing we did was co-create success criteria for our time together. I entered our agreed criteria into a single point rubric. We filled in Concerns and Highlights throughout the day. It worked well. I'll be using this strategy again!

@leeannjung I was a teacher early in my career, but times were different and so was the context. I don’t think it’s enough to rely on experience from the distant past to truly understand what today’s teachers are up against. (To be clear, I’m not saying you’re claiming that!)

@leeannjung as a consultant in the education space, I tend to agree with you but also, if you can swing it, I highly recommend signing up to sub in your local schools. I’ve found it humbling and I think it makes me a better consultant. It’s challenged some of my assumptions but also confirmed others. It’s great PD and you will be doing your part to address teacher shortages and burnout in your community.

After co-creating success criteria, 5th graders worked to recreate the Pumpkin Pie Shapegram. They earned stickers after meeting the criteria. It took perseverance to get it just right.
