The #subtropical climate has warm summers and mild winters. Temperatures vary according to height. The rains fall in winter in the north and are distributed throughout the year to the south. Societies have modified the landscape for livestock and agriculture.

Only the high #mountains of East #Africa have cold climates due to heights. It receives humid winds that produce important rains, especially in summer.

The desert winds are dry. In the Sahara the daily thermal amplitude reaches 80ºC.

The chamaca is native to the #IndoMalasian region, and primarily grows in #humid, #subtropical climates.
During #rainy season, the chamaca can grow in height at a rate of inches per day.
The aroma of the #flowers is a principal component of #JoyPerfume / #Joy #Perfume. The #fragrance of the flowers can be overwhelming even from several feet away. It is extremely sweet, but not obnoxiously so. There is a #powerful and #unique #floral scent that plays a perfect counterpoint to the sweetness.

Though most of #Florida is known for its #humid #subtropical #climate (#KöppenClimateType #Cfa #HumidSubtropical), Florida has #native species of #cacti. The #OpuntiaAmmonphila, or #devilstoungue, is a #cactus native to Central Florida. It often grows on the landward-side of #beach #dunes. The cactus can withstand the #salt spray from the #ocean, and grow along the #briney #marshes, where salt-free #water is scarce. They produce dramatic #yellow #flowers.

See the little peak at 65ky in the orange-coloured temperature curve? This curve is a reconstruction from #marine #pollen record in #ocean #sediment from off the South-East African coast. Chevalier et al 2020 https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geology/article/49/1/71/590736/Temperature-change-in-subtropical-southeastern ; their reconstruction actually spans a whopping 800ky but only in coarse resolution.

The actual peak is recorded to have begun 68ky ago, lasted until 64ky, and the actual ºC in #subtropical #Africa rose by 1.7ºC, from 17.2 to 18.9ºC. +1.7ºC - that's not a mean feat.
(But in my chart, I had to re-scale the temperature curve, and all others, to make them all fit on the 2 y-axes.)
The percipitation pattern for the region can be guessed from the taxa and pollen count in the sediment. There, the mystery is explained for WHEN the migration happened, and WHY not earlier.

Our acerola cherry tree (scientific name Malpighia emarginata or Malpighia punicifolia) is in full flower for a second time in 4 months. We picked about 1kg of fruit in late October and I’m looking forward to another crop in the next 3-4 weeks. Mr Mac eats them straight off the tree. Last batch I made some juice to add to Soda water.

This is the first time growing this plant and it’s doing particularly well in our subtropical coastal environment. #GardeningAU #FruitTree #subtropical

@jblue I somehow missed this post before! I only dabble in most types of #gardening but I've been interested in zone pushing #ColdHardy #subtropical #FruitTrees for awhile, and that led me to organize the #avocado breeding project this account is focused on. It's a long shot, but I'm hoping we can find or produce avocado trees able to survive and maybe even flourish here in the #pnw #cascadia
