We've lived at No 24 for, coincidentally, 24 years - during which we've never learned a neighbor's name. Nor have we tried to. Such mystery is the charm of our precinct.
Therefore they have nicknames.
On one side is "Mr (and, hence, Mrs) Boom Boom." He arrived about 10 years after us, cut down a ring of charming palms circling the backyard pool. He then proceeded to raise the height of his side fence by adding to, not replacing, the existing metal fence sheets... hammering them into the ground. For months. Months.
Fifteen years after us, the other side arrived and proceeded to renovate the house that had just been renovated by its seller. This dragged on for several years and seems now done with, but you never know. Although his epithet is irrevocably "The Renovator," his beloved, in accordance with her aspect (happily or not, only her loved ones can tell us) is known by us - in reported sightings from our watchtower - as Angela Merkel. God bless her.
In the 'moved away' category and sadly missed are, were, a quiet couple and their dog. She is nameless, perhaps due to never having been seen. Not so him or the dog. On our first sighting - as he walked that piebald creature by our door - it was instant consensus that, on coiffure alone, he was doubtless "The Rabbi." Fido's baffling habit of barking singular hoarse woofs - not less than once, not exceeding eight - at dusk, and only dusk, earned it the moniker "The Six O'clock Dog."

Especially if you live in a #suburban or #rural area. Then, you're most likely also a racist, fascist, coward, or a combination of all these.
