Known excitotoxin to be declared a possible carcinogen by the WHO.

I wonder when the food industry will jump onto some other sweetener, and then all of a sudden we will find to be carcinogenic.

Sucralose found in common sweeteners damages DNA, and may cause cancer. Sucralose is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener that is 600 times sweeter than sugar. It is marketed as Splenda and used in many food and beverage products. A recent study found that sucralose produces a genotoxic compound called sucralose-6-acetate when metabolized, which can break up DNA in human blood cells.

Wondering if anyone has experienced withdrawal symptoms after stopping sucralose. I was not a heavy user. The past couple years I drank a bottled lemonade sweetened with sucralose, never more than a quart, usually just 16 ounces, several days per week. It's the only sucralose I consumed.
Since stopping 5 days ago I have awakened with a headache that goes away in an hour or two. Headaches aren't normal for me.
Thoughts, anyone?

Splenda (Sucralose) Isnโ€™t Giving You Cancer

โ€œweโ€™ve got decades of safety data indicating that artificial sweeteners are not particularly harmful. While itโ€™s true that we cannot entirely exclude the potential for some harm of sweeteners at a population level, we can definitely say that there is currently very little evidence indicating that they are bad for actual human beings drinking or eating actual diet foods.โ€

Toxicological and pharmacokinetic properties of sucralose-6-acetate and its parent in vitro screening assays

BLUF: YIKES

Sucralose-6-acetate, a sucralose impurity and metabolite, was found to be genotoxic; induces breaks in DNA; impaired the integrity of intestinal barrier function; associated with intestinal inflammation, oxidative stress, and cancer; blocked two members of the cytochrome P450 family; a regulatory status review needs to be undertaken.

= = chlorinated sugar. โ˜ ๏ธ It's toxic as to be expected, a substance that is not easilly broken down in the environment.

Erythritol is a polyol, like xylitol and sorbitol. Nothing that would worry me.

The history of is interesting. Researchers were trying to discover a new pesticide because by chlorinating sugar, what else are you trying to make? It wasn't lethal enough. One of the researchers misunderstood the other and he tasted (!) the compound. That's how they found out it was ultra-sweet, 700 times more than sugar.
