The arson attack at St Catherines Church, Hatcham in 1914 was one of many perpetrated by a whose aim was to make women equal to men.

🦸‍♀️ The were instrumental in ensuring that today every woman can vote in democratic elections.

🏳️‍🌈 This is memento for many who are so unspeakably annoyed when, one day a year, a group of adults in rainbow costumes march peacefully through the town squares.

Disruptive, non-violent direct action works. Petitions and marches don’t. New research. Nearly seven in 10 of academics surveyed rated disruptive protest tactics as “at least quite important” to success of a movement, ranking it as more important than gaining media coverage or even strictly avoiding violent tactics. theguardian.com/world/2023/jul

@smollestbunny Yup to be allowed in her group Māori women would not be allowed to have a Moko and would have to do away with a lot of other parts of their culture.

She also edited ‘The White Ribbon’, a publication that produced articles in support of eugenics.
In the 1919 National Council of Women annual conference report, Sheppard suggested the
government needed to support children who were ‘well and healthily born, well-nourished
and well educated’, rhetoric that echoed ideologies of white perfection articulated by the
eugenics movement.

This practice of exclusion also continued to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s second wave
of feminism that developed in the 1970s, so much so that Māori women had to start their own feminist movement.

Wikipedia refers to this article, in *The English Historical Review*: jstor.org/stable/3490924

I no longer have access to journals, but as a professor you could probably read it if you'd like. If you do read the article, I'd be interested to know what you conclusions you draw.

There's a section of the article assessing the effectiveness of extreme measures by .

Quoth Wikipedia: "The extent to which suffragette militancy contributed to the eventual enfranchisement of women in 1918 has been debated by historians, although the consensus of historical opinion is that the militant campaign was not effective."

Edith Margaret , born Edith Margaret Williams, was one of the first female martial arts teachers in Europe. She is known for training a unit of bodyguards in techniques for the Women's Social and Political Union, so that they could respond to physical attacks on them by some anti-feminist men.

HG Wells is wrong about feminism, funny, some of the writing is awful -- yet it's irritatingly readable. Margaret Drabble's introduction to Ann Veronica, (1909) sets out the biographical background, how his affairs scandalised Fabians and others. I try to avoid reading English authors, but my dad liked Wells and so I read for that reason too.

Campaigners used an incredible range of creative tactics to disrupt and therefore bring attention to their argument.

Spoiling the census was a form of passive civil disobedience that highlighted the legal absurdity. Mary Maloney (see alt text) used a different genius.

Tory government jails peaceful climate change protestors under draconian new laws. Echoes of "The same applies to the actions of climate activists today. They have my support both because the barriers to protest that they are increasingly facing demonstrates the dangers to when protest is silenced and because is an existential threat that those with power must do more to confront.”

Renewed for a 4th season! .

Link is about the first season tho. Idk what it is, i kinda like those old mysteries, smoky rooms, Victorian clothes - and i get a who's a woman. Same old will-they-won't-they romance but it's comfort food. Cozy fun.

Maybe having grown up ultra conservative, i relate to having to navigate the confines, wanting to break free, surviving despite that.
