Edith Margaret #Garrud, born Edith Margaret Williams, was one of the first female martial arts teachers in Europe. She is known for training a unit of bodyguards in #jūjutsu techniques for the Women's Social and Political Union, so that they could respond to physical attacks on them by some anti-feminist men.

#OnThisDay, 10 Nov 1917, 41 suffragists are arrested outside the White House in Washington DC whilst protesting the force-feeding of suffragists in prison.
The “silent sentinels” were the first political group to picket the White House. From January 1917 to June 1919, over 2,000 women took turns at the protest. Around 500 were arrested in total, with 168 sent to prison.
