From ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus, summer rainfall was way above normal across northwest and Southcentral but well below normal across Southeast and eastern Interior. Summer 2023 average temperature departures from 1991-2020 normal in and near the Arctic. The departures in northwest Canada are staggering for summer. Nearly all land areas were near to above normal except for small areas in northeast Canada, western Alaska and the Russian far northeast. Temperature over the high #Arctic ocean areas always average close to normal before heat going into melting snow and ice instead of warming the air. #akwx #Summer2023 #Climate

Fairbanks Airport in August had an average dew point (a measure of the absolute amount of moisture in the air) of 51.8F (11.0C), which is the highest on record for the month. For July & August combined, #Summer2023 was indeed unusually humid (by Interior Alaska standards), with the third highest average dew in the past 72 years. While there's no long term trend (yet), the occurrence of 4 of the five highest since 2007 suggests #ClimateChange is afoot. #akwx @Climatologist49 @donaldjmorton

According to the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst), the summer of 2023 was the 27th (!) summer in a row that was too warm. It was 2.3 Celsius over the 1961 - 1990 reference period, and 1.0 C over the 1991 - 2020 reference period. (Press release in German)

August average temperatures were warmer than normal almost everywhere in and around Alaska, with the eastern Interior and adjacent areas in the Yukon especially warm. Eagle had the warmest August on record, Tok second warmest, Fairbanks and Gulkana third warmest. August rainfall relative to normal around Alaska showed considerable variability, but except for portions of the eastern Interior was mostly above normal, and in portions of Southcentral and western Alaska rainfall was way above normal. To no one's surprise, it's rained on more than half the days this summer in Anchorage. And the rain Thursday morning brings the total number of days this summer (June through August) with measurable rain (0.01 inches, 0.3mm or more) to 48. This is a bonus two weeks extra with rain, as the average is 34 days. This is also the second highest summer rain days on record: only summer 2010 with 50 days had more. #akwx #Summer2023
