The Neilson family played a pivotal roll in the development of the iron and steel industry in Scotland, and beyond. William's uncle, James Beaumont Neilson, invented (and patented in 1828) the hot-air blast process for smelting iron which tripled the amount of iron which could be produced per ton of coal. This process was first tested at the Clyde Ironworks near Tollcross in Glasgow.

Arnewood's first resident is listed as William Neilson of the Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Company. However, the only William I can find associated with that buisness died in 1882, and it seems more likely it was built for his son, Walter Neilson, who took over the business after the death of his father.
