“Watarase” by Fumio Itabashi (1982)
https://songwhip.com/%E6%9D%BF%E6%A9%8B%E6%96%87%E5%A4%AB/watarase
Itabashi is a jazz pianist with a searching, sometimes soaring style, similar to McCoy Tyner in his post-Coltrane years.
He composed this track, which appeared a year earlier on drummer Takeo Moriyama’s album Smile, and was arranged for a quintet. Here, stripped down to solo piano, it’s just as engaging.
What a melody!

“Romance” by Hiroshi Suzuki (1976)
https://songwhip.com/hiroshisuzuki/romance
A song that goes down easy on an early Sunday morning. Suzuki’s trombone and Takeru Muraoka’s saxophone pair beautifully and are lifted by the enviable rhythm section of Hiromasa Suzuki (keyboards), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), and Akira Ishikawa (drums).

“Alone And I” by Herbie Hancock (1962)
https://songwhip.com/herbie-hancock/alone-and-i
From the debut album by jazz pianist #HerbieHancock released on Blue Note Records, and what a crack band Herbie pulled for this session - tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins.

“Never Never Land” by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (1966)
https://songwhip.com/art-blakey/never-never-land
A nice piece for today’s #SundayJazz
Trombonist Curtis Fuller carries the melody of the Jule Styne ballad from Peter Pan. 🧚♂️
Supported by an A-list dream team of Blakey’s Messengers, including Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and, of course, Blakey on drums.

“Planets” by Masaru Imada Trio (1977)
https://songwhip.com/masaruimadatrio1/planets1977
Beautiful melodies this morning with one of Japan’s top jazz pianists, #MasaruImada , supported here by Tetsujiro Obara on drums, Kunimitsu Inaba on bass, and augmented by Yuji Imamura on percussion.
Imada’s delicate yet articulate piano runs seem to float on the breeze, and are wonderfully supported by the rythym section.

“Bouquet” by Bobby Hutcherson (1967)
https://songwhip.com/bobby-hutcherson/bouquet
One of the first songs I remember hearing from #BobbyHutcherson that stopped me in my tracks.
Bobby’s shimmering tones on vibes, Herbie Hancock’s piano solo, and a solid anchor in rhythm section Bob Cranshaw and Joe Chambers.
Sublime.

“Stolen Moments” by Oliver Nelson (1961)
https://songwhip.com/olivernelson/stolen-moments
Here’s one that may need no introduction for #jazz heads.
Allmusic.com is positively effusive in their praise calling this record “a must buy for all jazz fans, and a Top Ten or Top Fifty favorite for many.”
It’s worth the price of admission for this track alone. "’Stolen Moments’ really needs no comments, as its undisputable beauty…is more timeless as the years pass.”

“Tell Me A Bedtime Story” by Masao Nakajima Quartet (1979)
https://songwhip.com/masaonakajimaquartet/tell-me-a-bedtime-story
Nice version of the Herbie Hancock song here by #MasaoNakajima
Joining him is bassist Osamu Kawakami, who had previously collaborated with Sadao Watanabe. On drums is Donald Bailey, and rounding out the quartet, Toshiyuki Honda on flute and saxophone.

“People Make The World Go Round” by Milt Jackson (1972)
https://songwhip.com/milt-jackson/people-make-the-world-go-round
It’s a busy weekend, but right now I have a moment of quiet, ☕️ and the sounds of this album from #MiltJackson
It’s Jackson’s first session on the CTI label and with an all-star band: Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, percussionist Ralph McDonald, and guitarist Jay Berliner.

“Spirits, Pt. 2” by The Circling Sun (2023)
https://songwhip.com/thecirclingsun/spirits-pt-2
Inspired by giants like Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, #TheCirclingSun keep that brand of spiritual and modal jazz alive.
Great instrumentation here from luminous keyboards, lofty saxophones, fluttering flutes, shimmering vibraphone, harp, acoustic bass and full choir.
At once familiar and new, it’s one of my favorite jazz records I’ve heard this year.

“I Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry” by Dexter Gordon (1962)
https://songwhip.com/dexter-gordon/i-guess-ill-hang-my-tears-out-to-dry
Long a favorite of both fans and critics, Go was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2019.

“Ruby, My Dear” by Thelonious Monk (1959)
https://songwhip.com/thelonious-monk/ruby-my-dear1959
Early morning quiet, coffee and some #TheloniousMonk from his third solo album.
I’ve heard it said that Monk created his own vocabulary on the keys. No one else plays like he does. 🎹
Have a great day!

“Dai Hosaku (Great Harvest) by Makoto Terashita (1978)
https://songwhip.com/makototerashita/dai-hosaku-great-harvest
From the debut album by Terashita, and he’s accompanied by Bob Berg on tenor sax, Errol Walters on bass, Jo Jones Jr on drums, and Yoshiaki Masuo on guitar.

“‘Til Then” by Bobby Hutcherson (1967)
https://songwhip.com/bobby-hutcherson/til-then
Another head scratcher from Blue Note. This album, recorded in 1967, didn’t see a release until 1979, and then only as a limited edition in Japan, finally followed by a regular issue in 1980. Why, Blue Note? 🤷♂️
However it occurred, I’m glad we have it now. This track perfectly suits the mood for what’s shaping up to be a great Sunday. Have a great day, y’all.

“Watarase” by Fumio Itabashi (1982)
https://songwhip.com/%E6%9D%BF%E6%A9%8B%E6%96%87%E5%A4%AB/watarase
Beautiful solo piano rendition of the #FumioItabashi composed song which appears on drummer and bandleader Takeo Moriyama’s album Smile just a year earlier.
Have a great day! 😀

“Astral Traveling” by Pharoah Sanders (1971)
https://songwhip.com/pharoah-sanders/astral-traveling
Sanders’ seventh studio album and the last time he’d record with Lonnie Liston Smith, the composer of this track.
Just two years later, Smith would release his debut album, titled Astral Traveling, and opening with the same song.

“Upper Egypt & Lower Egypt” by Pharoah Sanders (1967)
https://songwhip.com/pharoah-sanders/upper-egypt-and-lower-egypt-medley
The second album released under his name and his first on Impulse!, Sanders said of his approach to sax and to music: “You see, everything you do has to mean something, has to be more than just notes. That's behind everything I do – trying to get more ways of getting feeling out."
Exactly what I love about spiritual jazz.

“Herzog” by Bobby Hutcherson (1969)
https://songwhip.com/bobby-hutcherson/herzog
I’ve said before, if Bobby made a bad record, I haven’t heard it.
This one marks the vibraphonist’s second recording with saxophonist #HaroldLand (the first was Land’s 1968 album The Peace-Maker). The two would become regular collaborators through the mid-70s.
Rounding out the lineup is Chick Corea on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums.
