So, to sum up, this album is great musically but the theme goes from a bit of Grand Guignol fun to an extremely nasty conclusion.
Anyhoo, next week is Raphael Saadiq with 'Jimmy Lee' which promises a look at addiction, mass incarceration, racism, and mental illness.
Final track now. After being traumatized from killing his wife, Steven escapes from the real world through alcohol, ending the album. This is cheery.
Oh, this is really grim. And it explains where the earlier track fits in. Steven is a nasty piece of work.
I wake up in the basement
I'm so hungry
I'm dry
I must be here sleepwalking
Mustn't I?
Getting up from my easy chair looking for my wife
Following a trail of crimson
Spots that lead into the night
Uh, oh.
I’m assuming Cold Ethyl is another drugs reference, unless it’s something to do with fridges
Only Women Bleed was an unlikely single from this album. Not really sure how this fits into the theme of the rest of the album tbqhwy
Fun fact! A blue lady is synthetic heroin, apparently. Don’t do drugs kids!
Anyone for a nice bowl of humanary stew?
Fun fact! The original Alice Cooper band were replaced by Lou Reed’s band for this album.
It’s Vincent Price talking about spiders!
Surprisingly funky opening track, setting the stage for the nightmare, literally and figuratively.
The story was strong enough for Cooper to act out protagonist Steven’s plight on an ABC-TV special, Alice Cooper: The Nightmare — and for once, he didn’t have to sing “I’m Eighteen.” (3/3)
… the rare ghoul able to upset parents but also gab with Dinah Shore. Thanks to songwriting contributions from guitarist Dick Wagner (Lou Reed, Kiss) and producer Bob Ezrin, the album deftly spans goth fantasies (“Steven”), Fred Astaire dance numbers (“Some Folks”), feminist ballads (“Only Women Bleed”), and Shaft-esque funkathons (the title cut) — sometimes at the same time. (2/3)
Rolling Stone says!
The Concept: A teenager named Steven finds himself trapped in his nightmares, encountering hungry black widow spiders, necrophiliacs, and Vincent Price before a rude awakening and a happy ending.
The Execution: Alice Cooper was staging ornate, macabre vaudeville revues before Welcome to My Nightmare, but it was only after he ditched the original bandmates and went all-in on his nightmare concept that he became Alice Cooper … (1/2)

Oh sing, sing, sing
For the dying of the day
Sing for the flames that will rip through here
And the smoke that will carry us away
Yeah sing for the damage we've done
And the worse things that we'll do
Open your mouth up and sing for me now
And I will sing for you
Well, guy in a skeleton costume
Comes up to the guy in the Superman suit
Runs through him with a broadsword
I speak in smoke signals and you answer in code
The fuse will have to run out sometime
Something here will eventually have to explode, have to explode
Ominous …
