Frank Wright - Kevin, My Dear Son (Sun Records, France 1979).

Great free session from saxophonist Frank Wright with Kamal Abdul Alim (t), Georges Arvanitas (p), Reggie Workman (b), Philly Joe Jones (d), Khalil Abdullah (perc) and with Eddie Jefferson on vocals (or rather… free scat!).

Peter Guralnick’s description of the differences between Sam Philips and Colonel Tom Parker captures so much, so concisely. Beautiful writing.

Rufus Thomas - Tiger Man (King of the Jungle) (1953)

On this day, January 5th, in 1923: Sam Phillips was born in Florence, AL.

Today's soundtrack: All those early Sun Records sides.

Today’s book club: Peter Guralnick's "Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll"

Today’s sneaky trick: Gifting a Cadillac to Carl Perkins, paid for out of Carl’s royalty statement.

Today’s smart investment: Holiday Inn

Today’s tribute song: The Drive by Truckers’ “Carl Perkins’ Cadillac.”

Listening to Gid Coe talking to Peter Guralnick about Sun Records and on their advice, looked this up - Jerry Lee Lewis's first performance on the Steve Allen Show, 1957.
It's hard to imagine now just how shocking & extraordinary this was at that time.

@ruralgloom I read Tracy's bio over at the site - a whole lot of talent, but sadly, poor timing.

No disrespect to Sam Phillips, but it seems to me that with his industry experience, he could have done a much better job of mentoring Tracy!

On this day, December 15th, in 1955: Johnny Cash, the Tennessee Two, and Sun Records released “So Doggone Lonesome” c/w “Folsom Prison Blues” (Sun Records 232).

Today’s soundtrack: A classic.

Today’s quote: "I sat with my pen in my hand, trying to think up the worst reason a person could have for killing another person, and that’s what came to mind." - Cash on the line "But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die."
