So far #SuperbOwl Sunday has been a delight.

Here is the Southern Owl nebula, otherwise known as ESO 378-1, from ESO’s Very Large Telescope in northern Chile.

The Southern Owl is a planetary nebula, the remnant of a dying star like our sun. At the end of its lifetime, the star that made the Southern Owl gently blew off its outer layers, creating this bubble-like nebula of gas and dust.

Unfortunately, Aotearoa-NZ lost its most #SuperbOwl. The whēkau, or laughing owl, was more than twice the size of a ruru/morepork.

Less than a century ago, there were still whēkau alive in the South Island. The species is now extinct.

Their distinctive laughing call was described as a “loud cry made up of a series of dismal shrieks frequently repeated.”
