Since a million—a number we think we comprehend—has 6 zeros, colloquially exa- as a prefix just means 1 million multiplied times 1 million, or a million-million. The next concept is FLOPS, which stands for floating-point operations per second, where 1 FLOPS might involve addition or multiplication involving a number containing a decimal, like 2.5 times 3 for example. Paper + pencil stuff, taking one of us about 1-2 seconds. The first supercomputer was put into operation in 1964, running 3 million FLOPS, or 3 megaFLOPS. Clear as mud so far? In May of 2022 the Frontier supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee clocked in at 1.1 exaFLOPS, at the time the fastest supercomputer in the world. Over next few yrs Frontier could reach a theoretical peak of 2 exaFLOPS. At Lawrence [no relation] Livermore National Lab in Livermore, California used software called HiOp "ran the largest simulation of its kind to optimize the power grid's response to failures from weather events, natural disasters and attacks." In only 20 minutes it was able to help scientists identify safe and cost-effective power grid setpoints for 100,000 grid failures. "A power grid setpoint refers to multiple measures of grid performance of conditions such as voltage, frequency and the active level of power." It's all about grid resilience + adaptability. "The 'bucket of water' reservoir computer has its limits. For one thing, the waves are short-lived. To forecast complex processes such as climate change and population growth, we need a reservoir with more durable waves.
One option is 'solitons.' These are self-reinforcing waves that keep their shape and move for long distances."

Supercomputers have revealed the giant pillars of heat funnelling diamonds upwards from deep within Earth. The pillars are made of hot rock that rises from the core-mantle boundary to the surface. The pillars could explain how diamonds are formed and transported to the crust.
