#Supermassiveblackholes (#SMBHs)—black holes with masses exceeding a million times that of the #sun—are known to prevail in the #universe today. However, it is not clear yet when, where, and how they formed during the 13.8 billion years of #cosmichistory.

A team of #European #astronomers, along with Indian and Japanese colleagues, has reported evidence that strongly suggests the detection of ultra-low-frequency #gravitationalwaves. Such waves, which have not previously been observed, probably originate from pairs of #supermassiveblackholes at the center of #merginggalaxies.

Scientists have proposed a new explanation for the origin of supermassive black holes, the most powerful gravitational objects in the universe. They suggest that supermassive black holes formed from the collapse of massive clouds of gas and dust in the early universe. This scenario could explain how some supermassive black holes grew quickly and became billions of times more massive than the sun.

A fun read! 🤓
Around 40 million years ago, some supermassive black holes interacted & one got ejected at ~1600km/s (this can happen through 3-body interaction or even just recoil kicks post-merger of two SMBHs).
This one then ploughed through circumgalactic gas, creating a 200,000 light-year-long tail of new stars & shock fronts. Hubble first took the data, but then lots of spectra were taken by Keck. The redshift is 0.964!
So yeah, now supermassive black holes are also on the loose.
