Ultra nieche good-to-know: if you want to put a Supermicro X10SLL+10 mainboard into a Supermicro CSE-823 case, you need the original Supermicro BKT-0028L backplate for mounting the CPU cooler.

The case has riveted mounting points which get in the way of cheaper sheet metal backplates. Mainboard can't be mounted properly then. Likely the case with other mainboards as well.

Hi everyone!

Can anyone advice on a good but not brand new server (i.e. #supermicro or similar)? Basically an affordable server for personal use but still powerful enough to handle some extra load if needed?

I currently have a X10SL7-F which so far is ok(ish) for the job, but I want to scale up within a reasonable price

Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

@cks I feel this. I've resorted to spinning up a VM with Win7 and Java so I can use the java iKVM to mount the ISO, because the CIFS option does. not. work. (👀 #Supermicro)

(or recently on #Dell, update the BMC to allow HTML5 KVM to then mount the ISO, because I can't make CIFS mounts work on them either)

Found on #MercadoLivre (like Ebay) a #Supermicro Mobile Rack CSE-M28SAB-OEM(https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/accessories/mobilerack/cse-m28sab-oem.cfm), it was stripped, and the HDD trays and cable was missing, but was "cheap" (350 BRL / 73 USD) and I found other seller selling the HDD tray (50 BRL / 10 USD each). I am just waiting for the iPass cables(25 BRL / 5 USD each) arrive, bought on #Aliexpress.

I'm setting up a new Supermicro server. Thankfully for IPMI it has HTML5 instead of the horrible java craplets.

I click "virtual media" to do an install remotely.

It comes saying it's not licensed. OMG. I can't even do a remote install on the f'ing Supermicro.

Why do they always make this impossible? It should have been painless so many years ago.

Heute einen Server in den Fingern gehabt, dem ich sein #EXT4 Rootfs auf #BTRFS mit #RAID1 umziehen wollte. Lief auch alles gut, bis ich festellen musste, das der #HBA nur ein Blockdevice beim Boot anbietet und erst dann alle weiteren Devices. Etwas schlecht wenn btrfs da nen zweites Device für sein Raid sucht.
#SuperMicro hardware, schon mal jemand den Case gehabt und eine Idee wie man das Fixt? Im (U)EFI/Bios habe ich auf die schnellle nicht finden können.

Has anyone bought from theserverstore.com? I’m looking at their Supermicro models and it’s stupid cheap. Definitely setting off alarm bells, but it could just be because refurbished really is that cheap.

I'm typing this on my #cellphone because my #desktop #crashed.
I don't know why it crashed, but it crashed.
The old boot array will not boot, but the data is there. I'm tarballing my home folder off it now, and will be going for /etc next.
Then I need to decide if I want to mount it all up, chroot it, and try to reinstall the Grub efi bootloader, or if I just want to start over.
I'll be making multiple copies of my backups all over the LAN to be sure it doesn't go poof.
It's older hardware (#SuperMicro X9DRH-7TF), but it should still function fine.
Still no idea why it crashed, but resetting the bios and pulling the controller firmware out of uefi and into legacy mode has allowed me to get this far with reconstruction.
Not how I wanted to spend my day.
I'm taking timeouts to check #JobListings, etc., but I'd rather be hunting for work

parts have started to arrive for my new #homelab server build. chassis is a #Chenbro #RM31616 with 16 hotswap SAS bays.

i'll be combining the hardware from a #supermicro #vmware host and a #netapp disk shelf into this one chassis.

#TIL that you can upgrade #SuperMicro BMC/IPMI firmware for EOL machines.

I've got two X8SIU-F boards here. Last IPMI firmware update is SMT_316.bin from 2014.

Turns out, the IPMI will happily eat a SMT_X9_352.bin update from a later X9SCL-F machine as well.

If one peeks into the firmware file one can still see the X8 platform defintions shipping with the X9 firmware file.

Unfortunately, the latest build for X10 has dropped them, so the upgrade will not apply.

🤔maybe I can patch it back in.
