Jean Rollin’s Lost in New York (1989), a precursor to his excellent Two Orphan Vampires (1997). This is a movie obsessed with time and with the pop culture of the past that Rollin loved.

There are two girls, lost in time and unable to find each other.

Subtle surrealism, dream-like, haunting. Brilliant movie.

Killing Car (1993), a very odd untypical Jean Rollin movie, but a very good and interesting one. An Asian woman has a car and a gun and she makes use of both. She goes on a killing spree.

There's Rollin surrealism here, but it's a gritty scuzzy harsh surrealism.

The Nude Vampire (1970), second of Jean Rollin's vampire films.

You might expect a straightforward erotic horror movie. If so you’re going to become very disoriented very quickly. Rollin was a surrealist. I don’t mean he just used surrealist images and techniques to add atmosphere. This movie is surrealism all the way through.

Great movie.

My latest folly is upgrading my entire collection of Jean Rollin's films from DVD to Blu-Ray.

I don't normally do this (I'm not obsessed with the Blu-Ray format) but the DVDs are from the early DVD era. And we are talking about Jean Rollin, just about my all-time favourite film director.

It's an expensive project.

Two Orphan Vampires (1997), a comeback movie for Jean Rollin and marks his return to the vampire genre.

Based on his own excellent novel Little Orphan Vampires.

It's about two blind orphan girls who are vampires. But this is a Rollin film so you'll come to doubt everything you see.

A hypnotic fairy tale infused with Rollin's subtle surrealism.

Brigitte Bardot in Roger Vadim's Love on a Pillow (1962). AKA Warrior's Rest, original title Le repos du guerrier.

A weird fascinating slightly surreal but extremely good movie.

Venus in Furs (AKA Paroxismus) from 1969 is one of Jess Franco’s most satisfying films. It’s a dream-like hallucinogenic movie that plays havoc with reality and illusion.

Franco was a jazz aficionado and was interested in the idea of structuring movies like jazz improvisations.

Stars James Darren and Maria Rohm. Superb movie.

Trans-Europ-Express (1966), a movie by Alain Robbe-Grillet called Trans-Europ-Express about a writer-director played by Alain Robbe-Grillet planning a movie called Trans-Europ-Express. Yes, it’s all very postmodern.

It's a wonderfully playful and enticing mixture of thriller, fun and artiness (yes such a combination was possible in those happier days).

Alain Robbe-Grillet’s 1983 film La Belle Captive was inspired by the works of the great surrealist painter René Magritte. From the very first we know we’re in surrealist territory.

Everything about the movie is consciously artificial. Which leads us to wonder if any of it is real, or perhaps to wonder what reality even means.

Visually stunning, erotic and witty.
