Magnolia kobus, known as mokryeon, kobus magnolia, or kobushi magnolia, is a species of native to Japan and Korea… and occasionally cultivated in temperate areas.

These bloom in the early spring, adorned with pleasantly fragrant white flowers.

In summer they grow lush green leaves, although in autumn, the leaves take on a yellow color and drop from the tree… but not before producing a clump (best description I have!!) of red seed pods.

I have never seen seeds like this (I think) on magnolias before!

How intriguing. Just had to share!

These two coloured ones are no exception, in .

Theyre flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron and bloom in the spring (April and May in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, and October and November in the Southern Hemisphere).

Their flowers often last several weeks. In this case, much longer. Shade tolerant, they prefer living near or under trees, as these are. The street-lined tree canopies in this suburb are legendary.

Pelargonium - aka , is native to southern Africa in the western regions of the Cape Provinces.

The owners of the property where this one is growing were heading out to walk their puppies. They were telling me they planted these in nothing but scoria (volcanic rock) in the front of their fence adjoining the footpath and they took like nothing else this summer / autumn.

A friend of theirs took cuttings from this lot and the woman said her friend’s geraniums were going gang busters in the back yard not far away, twice the abundance of what we see here!

So hearty and visually appealing, especially in deep red!
