Google: not telling. But tell you what, why not add OUR "real user monitoring" code to study YOUR website visitors if they use OUR browser product, and send THEIR data to OUR analytics product. Then OUR search product will be better.

@meg probably because I was born an out of touch old man, I have never heard the #surveilancecapitalism hashtag before, but it’s so perfect. Something I worry about (because we don’t have enough to worry about on this blue speck of ours) is the unsustainability of capitalism, which is being compounded exponentially by climate change, the global pandemic, and war. Anyway, glad to meetcha!

There's a setting "Allow my account to be indexed" that people can toggle and that instance admins can make opt-in or opt-out.

Why do we have that setting, if then it's not done to index accounts? While I think we should be very vigilant for crawlers and indexers that ignore those settings, I think we should embrace indexers that follow those settings.

They can make useful services. Nothing to do with #surveilancecapitalism, IMO; just making the fediverse usefull to minorities.

Apropos Github...

Ich weiss nicht, was mich damals geritten hat, als #Microsoft #Github kaufte, zu glauben, dass die schon nichts Schlimmes damit anfangen werden. Das "Warten wir mal ab, wie es sich entwickelt" war definitiv ein Fehler und ich kann heute nur jedem User und jedem Projekt raten, dort wegzugehen und freie Alternativen zu nutzen.

Github ist doch auch nur ein zentralisierter Teil für Lock-In und #SurveilanceCapitalism! Nutzt es einfach nicht & migriert von dort weg.

ICYMI: #FreeSoftware #Privacy developer Ola Bini, currently a major contributor to the OTR encrypted messaging protocol, has been detained with no or flimsy charges for 4+ days and counting in Ecuador. "Evidence" included having technical books and too many devices. They say he'll be held up to 90 days while they "develop charges" against him.
