I don’t believe we can put the genie back in the bottle.
But the foundational assumption the data sets used for training are “fair use” is problematic. It’s antecedent is the belief the raw data of surveillance capitalism is legitimately obtained. If that were so, data privacy advocates would not be working so zealously to limit the reach of Google, Meta, X, and data brokers.
We certainly agree people should not be abused.
Historical moment: after Meta lost the legal basis to collect user data for profiling and targeted advertising in EU, company must now obtain explicit user consent. This is how it looks like in Instagram :michael_scott: #privacy #bigtech #survelliancecapitalism

The WaPo story is excellent. Maria Ressa and Shoshana Zuboff’s books are required reading if you want the gory details.
The real question is: What are we going to do about it?

@kashhill
#survelliancecapitalism The databases developed for use by generative A.I. engines are particularly egregious examples of what Zuboff describes in her 2019 book. What Zhao and his team are doing with Glaze could help fight back. Excellent article!
Fastmail (v4.0.3) just began collecting tracking data on my Android device and trying to send it. They claim it's benign ("tracking errors and performance"), but they did this on the sly (no notification), it's not opt-in, and they provide no way to opt out, so I'm naturally suspicious. Guess it's time to look for a different email app. Any suggestions?
