Cheeky squirrel on the bird feeder. Definitely knows he's been sussed.

Today's moth is an Angle Shades, Phlogophora meticulosa. The wings fold along the body, and the markings resemble a withered brown leaf, for protection from predators.

All moths are humanely trapped, photographed, recorded on the Sussex & UK databases, & safely released.

This is a Buff Arches, Habrosyne pyritoides. It's really strange to look at - the patch behind the head almost looks like a hole, and is visually confusing.

All moths are humanely trapped, photographed, recorded on the Sussex & UK databases, & safely released.

Leopard Moth Zeuzera pyrina. This is the only one I've managed to see so far. Not your usual 'little brown job'.

Not many moths fly this time of year, but these two are aptly named December moths, Poecilocampa populi, and they have been around for about 6 weeks.

As you can see, they are built for the cold, having their own winter fur hat/scarf.

More garden wildlife from suburban Brighton, UK.

This is a female Broad-bodied chaser dragonfly, Libellula depressa, from springtime (May). I see these quite frequently, and this one was very obligingly still for me. Dragonflies are insects in the sub-order Anisoptera (meaning “unequal-winged”).

I usually follow back, & really appreciate and often follow boosters.

This bundle of yellow fluff with wings is a Canary Shouldered Thorn moth, Ennomos lniaria. So beautiful, and so pleased to say it was my 250th species caught in the home made back garden trap.

These are Privet hawk-moths, Sphinx ligustri. The largest UK hawk moth, with a wingspan up to 120mm. Common, very docile, easily handled, and great for showing to kids.

I'm a keen lepidopterist, observing. recording, & releasing moths in my small urban back garden.

I'm a keen lepidopterist, observing. recording, & releasing moths in my small urban back garden.

In two years I have recorded 258 verified species.

This is a Buff tip moth, Phalera bucephala. You can guess what he spends his life pretending to be, so he doesn't get eaten.

I had such a positive response to my first moth post, I'll do more. All from my back garden, nocturnal, and released back into the wild.

This is a Puss moth, Cerura vinula, wingspan about 60mm.
