I've lived in rentals without insulation. One rental was east-west facing, no insulation, no a/c, and no west-facing shade. It was an intolerable heat sink.

My current rental gets a cool breeze, is probably insulated, has good shade, and I've hung a 90% shade sail where it isn't. It is also north-south facing.

I can live reasonably comfortably with a 12V solar-powered fan and no a/c.

Installing a/c in an energy inefficient rental is a debt trap.

I made pasta this morning using the pre-soak method. It works.

Until now I've been using a 'hot box' method. I've brought water to the boil, added the pasta, brought the water back to the boil, then placed the saucepan with a lid on in an insulated cooler with an old sleeping bag. The pasta keeps cooking while you prepare the 'sauce'.

Both use the same amount of fuel. Pre-soaking uses more water but a hot box can be fiddly.

Temporary watertank made from an old Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC)

This one was originally used to fill someone's pool with water

The IBC has had a hole cut in the top & a screen inserted to allow water to enter

The screened overflow on the side drains via a Malabar Spinach pot to stormwater drain

Holds 1kl of water
Currently holding 700L

Weight empty around 65kg, so it is easily moved on a trailer / ute

Sealed against mosquitoes!!!!

Long term planning is completely out of the question in #SustainableRenting but there are some things you can do immediately:

✅ composting systems
✅ container gardening

✅ worm farm

The brilliance of container gardening is that you can move the pots around to maximise/minimise their exposure to the sun.

Morning all ☕

I'm up at stupid o'clock this morning (not altogether unusual) and running around with a broom up my jacksie* in preparation for my rental inspection today.

Remember when lettuce was $10? I rent but I don't buy it. It's ridiculously easy to grow year round from seed and is perfect for #ContainerGardening and #SustainableRenting

It also makes a fantastic gift. Plant different varieties for a pretty display.

I've got a rental inspection/lease renewal tomorrow and I've been tidying up the garden as we've had a lot of wet and wild weather here. I'm knackered 😂

I've been renting for over a decade and in that time I've moved multiple times across several states. This never stopped me gardening.

I like this article but you don't have to get fancy. I've grown (& composted) in cheap pots and moved my worm farm.

@t4ms I love the concept of the zeer & when I lived in arid regions it worked a treat. If anyone has a suggestion for hot climates, with humidity routinely above 70%, I am up for a DIY challenge

My Zeer is in constant use.

It's two unglazed terracotta pots, two unglazed terracotta saucers, sand, pebbles, sealant and a pot trolley with a stand inside to keep the contents off the base.

It keeps fruit and veggies cool and I have experimented with other things (be very careful so I'm not stating what). In winter I switch off my 12V camping fridge and keep everything outside in the Zeer. This reduces the stress on my #PortableSolar

It won't work in humidity.
