Dangerous street & intersection designs can keep people from walking & biking even if they never actually get hit. Like this intersection, near my home, which is designed to place waiting pedestrians directly in the path of on-coming vehicles. It's unnecessarily stressful, and would be considered laughably unacceptable by any contemporary best practice.
Yet we still build stuff like this? Why?
