With #loadshedding levels rising further still in South Africa in 2023 is it responsible to plan a trip to SA? Should tourists only come if they are going to have off-the-grid holidays? Does SA have enough no/low energy/green tourism products? Fair Trade Tourism has several but who else? Where can tourists find out about them? #sustainabletourism #responsibletourism #energy

Couchfish: The Writing On The Wall.
In the latest in my series on “rethinking travel” I look inwards—at travel writing and sustainability.
“From a sustainable tourism point of view, this is bad, yet it is the four- and five-star sectors that features most often in contemporary mainstream travel writing.”

Last night, at the invitation of Jaeyeon Choe O' Regan, PhD I presented to some tourism smart cookies at Glasgow Caledonian University on the whole backpackers vs quality tourists thang. Was lots of fun and great to speak to a class who were actually in a lecture wall rather than on their lounges! My apologies to Butler for butchering his chart—I’m a writer not a chartist! Also, Glasgow, you look damned cold. Thanks for having me 😀

Am so weary of pieces like this which seem to mindlessly equate high-end travel with sustainable tourism without question. Where somehow a $1,000/night luxury resort bartering rice for beach trash collected by locals is somehow considered noteworthy and not wilfully exploitative.

Couchfish: Foundations Matter
In the latest in my series on rethinking travel, I have a few thoughts on Community Based Tourism, with a quick look at three projects, two in Cambodia and one in Laos. Many thanks to Lee Sheridan for his thoughts.

Brittany Ferries with a new ship Rosslare-Bilbao
“Until now it has been very difficult to accommodate bike and foot passengers on this route,” Mr Dumoulin said. “Now we have the right ship, on the right route, so I am delighted to announce a change."
