@jon Lest you got too rosy a view of Irish Rail's bike carrying capacity - this is what I am faced with for my trip to Longford this morning.

Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority notes that the Climate Action Plan and the Avoid-Shift-Improve principle are central to the Authority's ongoing plans.

This means Demand Management measures in parallel with infrastructure development.

Some interesting perspectives on Fare Free Public Transport (FFPT) from France mobycon.com/updates/five-lesso

"FFPT policy...has an influence on the positive public perception of public transport and can lead to increased social diversity on board"

This can lead to "additional effects such as the reduction of conflicts and increased social safety."

The piece cautions, though, that implementing FFPT in an already congested network can be counterproductive.

The odometer on my ebike reached 6000km today. I've been using it as my main form of transport for three and a half years now.

In 2020, the DfT launched a "Fix your bike voucher scheme" to boost active travel. Now the evaluation report is out and shows it worked.

People were offered £50 vouchers to get the bike out of the shed and get it fixed. About 189,000 of 400,000 vouchers were redeemed.

The evaluation (45,785 responses) concludes that the scheme was successful in activating occasional or non-cyclists.

This seems like a very shortsighted decision by Dublin City Council. I hope Irish Rail take it to An Bord Pleanála.

It also illustrates an ongoing problem where there is a lack of coordination and consistency on climate action among different agencies of the state.

“It will always be a challenge to move from the status quo and get people out of cars but there are huge health benefits and environmental benefits. We need to stop delaying these big public transport measures because everyone benefits as long as it’s made accessible, safe and affordable for everyone.” - Mark Murphy, advocacy officer with the Irish Heart Foundation, one of the members of the Active Travel Coalition

"There has to be a renewed focus towards enforcing illegal parking that blocks footpaths, parking that blocks cycle lanes, parking that blocks bus lanes, As opposed to revenue protection." - @Feljin speaking to @dublininquirer

What the global South can learn from 's while avoiding the pitfalls of imitating the global North (a.k.a. colonialism), 🚌🌍 Spoiler: Germany broke the habit of imitating itself.

San Francisco is learning the hard way that "faster horses" is not the answer to urban mobility challenges. Instead of trying to make "better" cars we need a switch to sustainable transport modes - public transport, walking and cycling.

@anne_twain That just wouldn't happen. You can't Zoom into Parliament - all of the laws reqiure a physical presence. If the MPs have to be there, then some of their staff have to be there (the ones who don't, stay in the electorate for the most part). I don't think it's useful to focus entirely on eliminating travel, although that is part of the picture. Australia needs electrified high speed rail, and for the small amount of air travel that can't be eliminated, we should encourage the use of recycled biofuels and possibly hydrogen in the future, although I am for the most part a hydrogen sceptic.

It shouldn't be cheaper to fly from Dublin to Kerry than it is to take the train, or cheaper to fly Dublin to London than travel by sail and rail. We need to follow France's example and tax aviation to subsidise rail and ferry as more sustainable alternatives.
