One of the issues I keep seeing is that these newly developing walkable urban areas seem to focus on boutique businesses without solid long term prospects and without appeal to folks who really need walkability more than specialised high end commerce. Organically grown walkable urban areas can’t happen if we continue to focus on only high end commerce.

If you're ever in the hills of Tuscany there's a little medieval hamlet called Apella where you can sleep in rooms charmingly restored small houses.
All the food (including home made pasta) and the wines and liquors are produced in surrounding villages from locally raised products. Goats and chickens wander freely.
