A folk tale for #SwampSunday. Despite its appearance in a Tolkien blog it comes from my wifeโs family, so I canโt swear to its veracity. https://www.idiosophy.com/2018/01/goldberrys-kind-gets-around/

This #SwampSunday I was planting black willows on a riparian terrace, and fell into the Shenandoah River.
In Kazakh lore, Konayak is a forest demon with belts instead of legs.
Konayak lies on the ground and cries for help, but if you approach such a creature, it will weave its belts around your neck and suffocate you.

Located in the middle of the German Black Swamp, at the border triangle of Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria, the residents of a village are said to have indulged in a sinful lifestyle. As punishment the entire village sank, and only a dark lake remained: the swamp eye (Moorauge). From time to time hikers hear the clock of the sunken church strike and at night three swamp maidens float over the swamp.

Will-o-the-wisps - mysterious lights that appear above marshy areas - have given rise to various types of #folklore around the world. The lights have been seen as fairies, pixies, blood-sucking 'fireball witches', & indicators of hidden treasure. In some tales, the lights are caused by damned souls using coals from hell to lead travellers astray. The lights sometimes appear in graveyards, where they are referred to as 'ghost candles'. Will-o-the-wisps are caused by gases resulting from organic decay. #SwampSunday #weird #history #weirdhistory #paranormal #graveyard

There are many tales in #JapaneseFolklore of frog brides. In these stories, magical frogs take on human form with the goal of marrying a human man. They look just like regular women, only they tend to be quite frail & often don't have the strength to do many normal tasks. If undiscovered, their marriages can be very long & happy, but if the husband witnesses his wife transforming into or from a frog, it will all end tragically.

In #JapaneseFolklore iwana bozu are char (a type of river fish) who grow to an enormous size and transform into #yokai. They are able to shapeshift into human form, dress in Buddhist priest's robes, walk and talk. Mostly they approach people who are fishing in rivers to ask them to stop. They also talk to them about avoiding needless killing and taking only what they need. They warn people against fishing methods that cause damage such as river poisoning using Japanese pepper.
