At #Swan #Lake Iris Gardens, once the personal fishing property of the wealthy Hamilton Bland, was eventually bequested to the city of #Sumter, #SouthCarolina as a botanical garden filled with Japanese irises and other flowers, as well as 7 species of swan, such as this Mute Swan.

#SwanLake #Gardens was formerly the private property of a wealthy resident, but was donated to the city to maintain as a public #park.
The #flowers are amazing, such as this incredible #JapaneseIris with #white #petals with #purple veins and smaller, central petals, as well as bits of #gold in the centers of the large petals.

A white #Iris at the Swan Lake Iris Gardens in #Sumter, #SouthCarolina.
Originally the private fishing property of Hamilton Carr Bland, a wealthy citizen, Bland purchased #JapaneseIris bulbs, which failed to thrive in his manicured garden. Angry, Bland ordered his gardeners to throw the bulbs in the #marsh, which exploded in #blooms the next year. Bland expanded the property and left it to the city of Sumter, which maintains it as a park for the public.

Originally the property of wealthy businessman and avid fisherman Hamilton Carr Bland, this is now the public Swan Lake Iris Gardens.
Bland originally hoped to spice up his property by planting exotic iris bulbs, however, none bloomed. Furious, he ordered the gardener to throw the expensive bulbs into the swamp.
The next year the swamp blossomed with dramatic Japanese iris flowers.
Bland also collected all seven species of swans, and eventually bequested the land, as well as more land gifted to him that was made part of the gardens, to the city of Sumter, South Carolina to keep up as a public park.
