The more I thought about this, the more I thought about how different people might interpret it.

After the first meeting of the lead couple (which happens fairly early in the 1st episode, so this is not really a spoiler), the ML comments to his secretary that the FL is sexy. Some people may think he’s referring to her looks, but I took it to mean that he thought the sly way she just insulted him was sexy.

He’s a young, good-looking, CEO-chaebol and probably hasn’t had many people ever question him and she takes him down a peg on their first meeting. This interpretation flavored my experience of the entire rest of the series. I think if you miss that insult and how much it surprises & tickles him, you might interpret a lot of things differently.

This is rich chaebol (with trauma), but the girl is more middle-class and she has super powers which make her strong & vulnerable at the same time. I felt they were equals always - but in complementary ways. (He’s educated, she’s not, she’s more open with her feelings, he’s not.) Even though he teases her about not being smart (so does her family) there are several scenes where you can see how much he admires her.

If you watch, he is very jealous and manipulative at first, especially when he doesn’t understand his feelings, but there is a lot of character growth for both of them.

My favorite is “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon”.

You’ve seen the leads willing to risk their lives to protect their loves, but In SWDBS, not only does he risk his life more than once, his love for her is so profound that he is willing to … (well, I can’t say because that would be a spoiler - but you’ll need tissues).

I’ve seen comments where people complain about the ML being the manipulative, spoiled, rich chaebol, but if you watch closely the FL has him wrapped around her little finger and he loves it. He is also sweet about respecting where she is in acknowledging her own feelings. It’s a beautifully developed love story with romance, silliness, and acceptance.

If you can’t tolerate the silly gangsters, then it would be hard to watch, BUT it does have (IMHO) one of the best love stories ever.

I have rewatched the love story part about a dozen times - but you have to get a few episodes in to start to see that story really develop.

The gangsters end up bringing comic relief from the horrible criminal activities.
