Just like Involuntary, his previous film, Play is a constant cringe fest. It's uncomfortable because Östlund puts up a mirror on our polite selves. He refuses to show the black kids in better light. "Society made them that way," would be a way too simple explanation. They act violent and obnoxious because they can get away with it. They are playing the stereotypical role that white privileged folks put on them. They taunt on white folks' appropriation of 'black' culture as wide-ranging as from dreadlocks to Lion King themed school dance. Ordinary Swedish citizens don't know how to deal with them other than look down at their feet or call law on them. They don't know how to interact face to face with these peeps. Funny but pointed and not all the way successful, Play, just like Seidl's Paradise Trilogy, is an interesting film that needs to be seen widely and being discussed further.

No doubt, the Vietnam war constantly on TV reflects Bergman’s sentiments in The Passion of Anna. It ends with horrendous fistfight between Andreas & Anna, as predicted by the letter in the beginning, and Andreas literally walking back and forth, vacillating and collapsing under the weight of his own guilt & shame & desire both to be alone and be with someone. Emotionally bare and structurally, technically jarring, it is a deeply pessimistic, open wound of a film.

's youthful energy & insatiability for life is infectious. So that's why that Monika staring into camera scene near the end is so chilling. She was slightly manipulative as any young pretty girls are, but there is something more pernicious in her eyes now. Her innocence & youthfulness is gone. Harry, now a regular boob, pines for that glorious summer days. Bergman paints realistic picture of a summer fling & its aftermath. It burns!
