THE VIRGIN SPRING (’60): An incredible viewing experience. Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of an old Swedish ballad about a virgin’s brutal rape and murder, and her father’s vengeance, is not soon easily forgotten, and not just due to that theme. Stunningly constructed, photographed, and told. Each shot often feels like a painting come to life. The starkness often adds to the grimness. And some very deep themes explored throughout on religion and revenge. Truly a masterpiece.

SWEDENHIELMS (’35): Another early (pre-Hollywood) Ingrid Bergman, this a filming of a play about a family on the edge of either bankruptcy or massive success (via a Nobel Prize). Thought this quite well done. Ingrid was a great screen presence even at such a young age, her passion and fire in the “breakup” scene attention-catching. Would be remiss if I didn’t mention Tutta Rolf, who plays the sister/aspiring actress, was really good too.

JUNE NIGHT (’40): Ingrid Bergman’s last Swedish film (for many decades anyway) is a very nicely crafted and styled piece about a victim of violence who can’t escape the shadow of the crime. Setup provides for some interesting commentary on victimhood and the media. Ingrid is stunning as always. Her pre-American period is an unjustly underappreciated one. Many little gems like this.

Just watched Exodus (2023) and loved it.

The plan was to watch The Whale after this... but I needed something to cheer me up so I went and saw Scream VI instead. You know, to unwind.

Somehow I ended up doing the INTERMEZZO films in the wrong order, as I watched the American one first and now finally caught the 1936 Swedish original. Definitely thought the remake superior. What recommends this most (to us modern viewers and, back then, to Selznick) is Ingrid Bergman. She’s photographed wonderfully and is radiant. Kinda tougher to believe her falling for Gosta Ekman than Leslie Howard though.

Just watched Vingarne (The Wings), a Swedish silent film from 1916 that is one of the first feature length queer films. Even though the movie wasn't complete (the original prints burned up) it was a pretty cool experience with live music.
