A SHIP TO INDIA (’47): Early Ingmar Bergman is an excellent portrayal, told mostly in flashback, of a crumbling family dynamic aboard a salvage ship. I mean, hey, when dad brings a mistress home to live with mom and son, and then son falls for the mistress, what do you think is gonna happen? Love the moody photography and the poetic realist vibes infused throughout this. Right up my alley. #swedishfilms #40sfilms
LOVING COUPLES (’64): A stunning debut work from Mai Zetterling, chronicling three pregnant women at a clinic, starting at the end and then going back to how they got there. Boldly conceived and executed, and shockingly modern/confrontational even as it’s wrapped in the seemingly staid trappings of nobility. Especially admired the jolt provided by cutaways between the antiseptic clinic setting and the lively Midsommar debauchery. Deserves to be better known. #swedishfilms
