Displacing #unhoused people causes harm, disconnecting people from the small start of networks of support & community that offer the best way to safety & stability.

#Displacement worsens problems— but hides them from richer society and the media that is supposed to be our eyes & ears.

The question to ask each #houseless person threatened with a so-called #sweep is what alternative they have been directly offered, and, if any, why it is inadequate for ending #homelessness

Tonight I attended a neighborhood meeting regarding a planned "clean up" of a homeless encampment just outside a nearby park. Homelessness is a persistent problem in Los Angeles; the number of homeless persons increased by about 10% in 2022, based on the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, as part of an ongoing year-to-year trend. While the city attempts to couch its methods of approaching the issue in terms of compassion, it is always clear that the views of most housed individuals is that they just want the homeless people to go away, with little to no compassion for the lives or welfare of those people.

The meeting did not begin well. After some opening comments by the police who were hosting the meeting and representatives from other organizations, one of the members of the encampment attempted to read a statement about how they have been treated and what their needs are. The officer who was moderating the meeting cut off the statement because it was "not a question" while large parts of the audience heckled the speaker. This "must be a question" requirement was enforced unevenly for the rest of the meeting, and it was particularly harsh to mete out against the people who are under threat by the planned sweep, who rarely have a chance to be heard by their community.
