#today It was time to dig up all of the spent corn stalks so they could be transported to the local history center to be used as decorations for their Autumn festival. #BeetBear was a big help and did most of the hard work, stopping only to pose for his beauty shots. Now we're hoping they show up with their truck in the next few days to pick them up.

#today we just ended our cornfest 2023. Our total ears of #sweetcorn brought to the table from the #garden this season was 197. This is not bad but our third planting ended up a little disappointing because I did not manage to feed the last row of corn enough for a variety of reasons, but lesson is learned for next year! (If I count the 4 ears the squirrels stole we grew 201 ears) Oh, yes, we also have several tons of #tomatoes (lost count)

#today I was pleased that we are now able to continue our CornFest 2023. The third planting is now ready to begin harvesting. So far, between plantings 1 and 2 we have managed to bring 165 ears of #sweetcorn to the table. (Yes, we eat 99% of it ourselves. This is my reward to myself for all the garden labor.)

#today #BeetBear helped out by doing some berry picking in the drizzly morning #garden . He also decided it was time to inspect the third planting of #sweetcorn to determine it's readiness. His conclusion was that we wait at least one more day to continue our cornfest summer.

#today got up early to pick veg. to share with our daughter, who is visiting for the weekend. I lost count of how many bees were working the squashes in the morning sun! After she took what she wanted we still had a surplus for the neighbors. My daughter was visiting to partake of our "corn-fest" We have now managed to bring to the table 90 ears of #sweetcorn from our first planting! Second planting will be ready in a day or two. Can't wait.

#Today the Corn-Fest continues. This batch makes 50 ears of #sweetcorn so far from my first row of planting and I'm only about ⅔ of the way through the row. Only 2 lost to squirrels, so far. Also saw this Spicebush Swallowtail on the Tiger Lillies yesterday.

#today it's going to be way too hot for me to do any practical work in the garden, so I was out early "berry" picking for things to have with dinner (which will be mostly #sweetcorn, as usual). Saw this nice Tiger Swallowtail enjoying the Echinacea. Stay cool! 😀

#today we did the first picking of our #sweetcorn (var. Flagler). My (very old-school) corn recipe:
1. Get a large pot of water on the boil (no additions)
2.Pick the corn
3. IMMEDIATELY husk the corn and drop it in to the boiling water.
4. When boiling resumes leave corn in for 3 min.
5. Pull out the corn and eat it ASAP. (butter and salt to taste.)
6. Rpt every day for as long as the harvest lasts.
You will never taste anything better from your #garden

#today Had a close call with the #sweetcorn last evening. Another blustery 20 minute deluge blew through yet again and tried to knock down the stalks. The rope supports mostly did their job, so I don't have a big mess. Good thing I'll be harvesting this section later this afternoon. My "having corn every night for dinner" season has begun! #today it has been 2 weeks since #BeetBear and I started our first planting of the sweetcorn. We planted them out in the garden and got them watered in. After dinner we will start the next 32 pots of seeds for our next planting in two weeks time.

The first #SweetPotatoSlips are potted up and moved to the cold greenhouse. They were broken off #SweetPotatoes rooting in water and then put in glasses with water to root. 10 slips from 3 tubers so far (more to come).

QUESTION
Common knowledge says to sow 2 seeds of corn and to thin for 1 plant, but the cob suggests clusters of plants in nature. Has anyone tried growing #sweetcorn in modules/clusters of 2?

Start of the New Year means #allotment and #greenhouse planning. This year, more than ever, is about #survival food, #potatoes, #beans, #cabbage, #broccoli, #sweetcorn, and #onions on the #allotment. In the #garden plot we will be growing #tomatoes, #carrots, #lettuce and #radish. In the #greenhouse we will be growing #tomatoes, #sweetpeppers and #chillies. Stuff that gets eaten quickly, can be dried, stored or left standing in the ground. Got to make my £20 a year rent produce for us!
