#OTD in 1969, Dr Colin Scott Dafoe, a highly regarded surgeon in #Edmonton and a veteran of the #SWW who led a British #SOE mission supporting Tito's Partisans in 1944, disappeared in Waterton Lakes National Park. His remains were found three years later. He had an amazing life.

Today in 1942, at 1:30 a.m., work began on the Alaska Highway starting from Dawson Creek. The temperature dipped down to -35C & the arrival of American troops boosted the town's population from 600 to 10,000.
Construction completed on Oct. 28, 1942.

#OTD 1943 Minesweeping Trawlers HMT EARL KITCHENER & LORD GREY (part of 170th Minesweeping Group) depart Colombo, Sri Lanka for Madras (Chennai) then Calcutta (Kolkata), which is assessed vulnerable to enemy mining. They are fitted with LL (magnetic) and SA (acoustic) sweeps & will arrive at their destination on the 28th. Today in 1901, Mona Parsons was born. She moved to the Netherlands in 1937. It was there, during WW2, that she used her house to help downed Allied pilots & the Dutch Resistance.
She was eventually captured & put in a prisoner of war camp by the Nazis.
