No spoilers, but I was left stunned & shattered by the dramatic & explosive ending of ALL ABOUT AH-LONG (1989), a heartfelt & heartbreaking drama about a father & son dir. by #JohnnieTo.

Struggling single dad Ah-Long (#ChowYunFat) must choose between his happiness & what's best for his son when the boy's well-off mum (#SylviaChang) unexpectedly shows up in Hong Kong after a 10-year absence & asks to take her son to live with her in the US.

#NYE plans: I normally stay in, drink lots of beer, & re-watch 2 or 3 films by a favourite director. Last year it was Almodóvar (LAW OF DESIRE, HIGH HEELS, & THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET).

This year it's #AnnHui, a key figure of Hong Kong's New Wave Cinema of the '70s & '80s. Starting off with THE SECRET (1979), an unnerving, atmospheric whodunit, starring the amazing #SylviaChang, who becomes an unwitting sleuth grappling with her friend's murder. [1/3]

Re-watched this gem of a film last night. #BillWong's moody cinematography of late '80s New York & #SiqinGaowa's stunning performance are the standouts of FULL MOON IN NEW YORK (1989) dir. by #StanleyKwan. A quiet, melancholy film about displacement, urban alienation & connecting through loneliness. Haunting performances by #MaggieCheung & #SylviaChang too.
