@mjg59 I only got to experience it briefly but one mistake was biting too much: #Nokia wanted to fully replicate years of #Symbian functionality immediately, rather than doing some new things really well. That slowed things down, and then they added Intel to the mix, further reducing the pace.

I was positively shocked when the #N9 came out. The whole UI had been rethought (again), but this time with some actual vision. It was exciting, so of course it was killed.

Right now I'm listening to the #RADIO on an old pre-smart phone / #featurePhone (proably running #Symbian?); it feels so nostalgic. I wound the cable of my heaset around my neck to utilise my own body as an #antenna.

The only bad thing about it is that the battery is ruined; I have no hope to get a functional spare battery. But it motivates me to buy a new Nokia phone (which also has a radio)

I've had two old symbian phones ( #nokia N8 and Nokia 808) in a box for so long and they still work really well. Can't actually daily drive either because it doesn't have 4g, the battery doesn't last very long and the browser is unusable. Now I mostly just use them to play old games that were never ported to android.

TIL that Nokia didn't actually start #Symbian and didn't even develop it at the time they used it on the #Nokia Communicator devices (Nokia 9200 in 2001, Nokia 9300/9500 in 2004 and Nokia E90 in 2007).

I never realised that Nokia licensed the OS, nor did I realise that it was started by Psion and is actually the same OS as the 32 bit version of EPOC.

Nor did I realise that Symbian Ltd., the company from which the Symbian Foundation arose, was the same company as #Psion after a name change.

I guess maybe I should check out an old Psion #PDA after all. I might like it more than I assumed, if only for it's OS.

After having used #Symbian and #Harmattan and #WindowsPhone OSes as daily drivers, I was pretty much forced to choose #Android or #iOS at this point, but I did get a #Jolla smartphone to keep one foot in the non-mainstream OS space. Jolla's #SailfishOS was a direct descendent of #Maemo / #Nokia #MeeGo and #Harmattan. It didn’t seem as important to support other operating systems back then, with #Symbian and other various feature phone OSes in recent memory, but now I worry about this duoculture. I think about that nasty #PegasusExploit and other shocking vulnerabilities and it makes me wish we didn’t have all our security & privacy eggs in two baskets.
