The localized syndemic assemblage is a way of thinking locally about global #PublicHealth threats and will hopefully lead to improved anticipation of synergistic public health crises.

8) At 11:43 p.m. Friday, both of Montreal's pediatric emergency rooms were filled to over-capacity, likely reflecting the severity of this #COVID-Influenza #Syndemic. What's more, 2 adult ERs were filled to at least 200 per cent over-capacity, as you can see from the chart below.

6) And this #Syndemic is resulting in more co-infections. In California, for example, hospitals in Bakersfield observed that co-infections of #COVID, the flu and other respiratory viruses have surged by 30% from a month ago, "after a similar jump in cases affecting children."

5) This #COVID-Influenza #Syndemic is also occurring in the U.S., as you can discern from the comparative charts below. So far this flu season (likely the worst in more than a decade), the CDC estimates there have been at least 120,000 U.S. hospitalizations and 7,300 deaths.

4) Of course, the flu epidemic cannot be viewed in isolation. Canada is now in the grip of a #COVID19 and flu #Syndemic. The chart below reveals a slight uptick in COVID hospitalizations. Notice in this chart how the valleys in the last two peaks are higher one after the other.👇

8) It bears repeating the definition of a #Syndemic, which is the reality now in Quebec. It's an "aggregation of two or more concurrent or sequential epidemics or disease clusters in a population with biological interactions, which exacerbate the prognosis and burden of disease."

6) Of course, a mask mandate is not a miracle solution. It would be one of several measures to fight the #Syndemic, including vaccination. On that score, since mid-August, 27% of the adult Quebec population has received a bivalent booster to guard against #Omicron subvariants.

4) The Health Ministry acknowledges the importance of wearing a mask in public to limit the transmission of respiratory viruses in this unprecedented #Syndemic, posting this message below on its Twitter feed. However, the government has stopped short of making this mandatory.

3) This #Syndemic of #COVID and influenza has also resulted in a growing number of school teachers booking off sick. This prompted the Lester B. Pearson School Board to urge mask-wearing in class to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses.

10) It's worth repeating that Quebec — as is now the case in France and the United States — is no longer only in the grip of the #COVID pandemic, it is convulsed by a #Syndemic of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza. Yet sadly, this reality has gone largely unnoticed by our authorities.
