A couple of words on migration from one #SynologyNAS to another.

I prepared a backup in two different places (just in case) and was ready to wait a whole day to restore it, but #Synology #DSM broke all my expectations. After I moved my drives from an old DS223 to a new DS423+ and started it, it said: "Hey, looks like you are migrating from another NAS. Do you want to restore your system on a new NAS with a single button click?".

So far, DS423+ performance is super satisfactory. Especially #Plex. Sure, after the RAM upgrade from 2 to 6 GB.

On my way to more #privacy… But really struggling to get #Synology #MailPlusServer work with my domain name… with a dynamic IP and #DDNS 😣

Do you find such a setup realistic, or do I risk missing emails because of an IP change?

I have had my #fairphone 4 for about 9 months now. I bought it specifically because I can De-Google the device. Last week, I was able to do this. WOW! I now use my own #Synology NAS for my emails, calendar and notes. Just wish we had a #FairphoneTablet that linked as seamlessly as iPhone and iPad -
That would be a game changer.

I'm upgrading my #SynologyNAS. I found out that I want to stick with #Synology and there are models with #Plex hardware encoding support up to 4K. Also, more powerful models support object recognition in #SynologyPhotos. Ah, and for futureproofing it should have 4 drive bays.

So DS223 => DS423+

After my debacle with #Apple (using their « advanced data protection » that actually corrupted all my data), time to move away from the very last #GAFAM service I was using: #icloud.

Monday, I get and configure my #Synology #NAS. I will #selfhost: pictures and home videos, email, contacts, calendar, reminders, notes, files.

#firefoxsync will be my bookmarks, history and passwords manager.

I’ll keep #AppleMusic for convenience, for now.

Hey guys, I’m about to setup my #synology and would like to self-host #email .
I hear a lot about sending mails that can be an issue: without a « reputation » the mails you send might get considered as spam.

But can’t I store my mails locally and use an external, well-reputated SMTP server, to avoid such spam issues?

😫 Struggling to remotely wake your home PC due to ISP limitations? With a Synology Diskstation, you can bypass this issue in a few simple steps:

1️⃣ Create a new scheduled task
2️⃣ Set the user to 'root'
3️⃣ Schedule it for one-time execution
4️⃣ Insert command: synonet --wake 11:22:33:44:55:66 eth0;
5️⃣ Save and run the script

Ensure your UEFI & NIC driver are configured to accept magic packets. Now you can wake your PC from anywhere via DSM over QuickConnect. #Synology #WakeOnLan

I have two questions for anyone using #SynologyNAS :

1. Isn't RAID 1 enough for data protection? I mean, how lucky you should be to have two drives fail at the same time?

2. If you backing up, do you use a secondary #NAS to back up your primary NAS?

I hope that this can help people who haven’t made the move yet to just do it. It’s not per se a privacy issue, but delegating all your data to 1 « closed » provider is a dangerous thing to do.

I also highly recommend and will heavily use @privacyguides to adopt the most #open and privacy-minded solutions!

A long overdue upgrade; NAS now attached to UPS, with roughly 30 minutes of running time before shutdown. Should take care of most unannounced and short power outages.

(Yeah, the upgrade came as a response to ... an unannounced power outage.)
