A couple of words on migration from one #SynologyNAS to another.

I prepared a backup in two different places (just in case) and was ready to wait a whole day to restore it, but #Synology #DSM broke all my expectations. After I moved my drives from an old DS223 to a new DS423+ and started it, it said: "Hey, looks like you are migrating from another NAS. Do you want to restore your system on a new NAS with a single button click?".

So far, DS423+ performance is super satisfactory. Especially #Plex. Sure, after the RAM upgrade from 2 to 6 GB.

I'm upgrading my #SynologyNAS. I found out that I want to stick with #Synology and there are models with #Plex hardware encoding support up to 4K. Also, more powerful models support object recognition in #SynologyPhotos. Ah, and for futureproofing it should have 4 drive bays.

So DS223 => DS423+

I have two questions for anyone using #SynologyNAS :

1. Isn't RAID 1 enough for data protection? I mean, how lucky you should be to have two drives fail at the same time?

2. If you backing up, do you use a secondary #NAS to back up your primary NAS?

I use NZBget for downloading files
Plex server is running on the NAS.

I also have an #appletv with #plex and I watch movies and tvshows in original version with French subs.

Here is the thing : from the NAS I mainly download .mkv but Plex has hard time with them.

How can I easily convert each file I have already and the future ones for .avi or .mp4 to please Plex ?

Well, I gave the #RaspberryPi a good try as my #Mastodon host, but ended up moving back to my #SynologyNAS. I had two main issues:
1. Lack of storage
2. System instability

Successfully migrated my #Mastodon instance from my #SynologyNAS to a #RaspberryPi lastnight! It was super easy thanks to #DockerCompose No problems so far. Hopefully with regular pruning, I can keep the Micro SD card from filling up! #MastoAdmin

I‘m using a #SynologyNAS with #SynologyDriveServer and my scanner uses this as a network share to store scans. On the DS a docker container with an ocr job runs hourly (SynOCR). This works fine. Currently the following workflow is manual and I want to #automate it. So I need a tool, which automatically checks a folder on the DS for newly created files and then runs actions, based on the file name (e.g. move it into a specific folder). Does someone here has ideas or tools, that might work for me?

Endlich kehrt Ordnung ein ins Heimbüro. Die Ablage aller Dokumente ist perfekt organisiert, die liegen nun nicht nur irgendwo auf dem Laufwerk, wo nur ich es wiederfinde, haben ihre Tags und sind durchsuchbar, Papierzeugs wird vorher gescannt.
Das Webinterface ist auch vollständig vom Smartphone aus bedienbar.

Ok, one mystery solved, one problem solved. The #SynologyNAS when running #Tailscale seems to prefer that IP on the local LAN for some reason. And the #pihole was restricted to local, meaning DNS failed spectacularly. Telling #dnsmasq to listen to both eth0 and tailscale0 seems to have fixed the issue.

@Freemind it's not currently a problem, but eventually I plan to set up a PDC on my #SynologyNAS since I'll have my own Win10 box, and want to, uh, practice that side of #sysadmin
