Gotta respect the hell out of @coachtony for being so open here on past #medium challenges and missteps.
Feels like a service that I can trust, which is a bit odd to say these days - and I will be looking hard at Medium this very weekend.
I have been meaning to start a #SystemsSafety, #Manufacturing, #Robotics and #EngineeringEthics publication...

#FollowFriday is here! 🤝
This Friday I would highly recommend following @CrackedWindscreen and @ajpbradley of the The Motoring Podcast.
I am not a big "car person", but it is refreshing to see that in at least some quarters of the #automotive sphere... there is still room to talk about #SystemsSafety and #PublicSafety issues as they pertain to emerging technologies.
Andrew and Alan do that routinely - and more.
Check it out!

Perhaps it is an unpopular opinion here, but I sort of miss the ability to effortlessly start an ad-hoc "Twitter Space" to talk #Robotics or #Manufacturing or #SystemsSafety with any colleagues here on #Mastodon (and then others that were interested could wander in)...
They were sort of good way to quickly get things off the chest and to quickly respond to breaking news.
I sometimes preferred them to writing long-winded threads for complex topics.
I don't know, just thinking out loud...

I am not an investor in anything, but I guess Musk stated something similar to this tonight on a #Tesla earnings call...
"Musk is now saying that Tesla's FSD with Hardware 3 is (will be?) around 200% safer than a human, while the upcoming Hardware 4 will be more like 500%."
Musk constantly throws the term "safety" around like a cheap suit.
If I was ever in the position to and actually cared to ask him, I would ask Musk how he defines "safety".

"After all this time, #Tesla #Autopilot still doesn't allow collaborative steering and doesn't have an effective driver monitoring system," said Consumer Reports Auto Testing director Jake Fisher in a statement.
And that is amongst the least of Tesla's #SystemsSafety wrongdoings associated with this system... and we have not even broached the enormous #FSDBeta issues yet.

This is an absolute tragedy for #RoadwaySafety, at a time when we can least afford it in the US.
Professor Missy Cummings is one of the foremost experts on automated systems, Human Factors and #SystemsSafety and her work at the #NHTSA was undercut from Day 1... undercut by multiple issues.
The NHTSA desperately needed her expertise during a time of very dangerous technological change in the auto industry.
And that is gone now.
Let me explain.

Let me just state this for the record...
Musk should be no where near medical device development - not with his deplorable #SystemsSafety record in some of his other firms.
Musk is not competent nor has the appropriate ethical backbone for medical device work.
@darius Thanks for sharing this, it is definitely a great #SystemsSafety summary! Since I'm in the automotive space, I'm interested in if he had thoughts on safety when the operators have limited training and often aren't experts, unlike medical areas with doctors, nuclear reactor operators, and airline pilots.
Another #SystemsSafety Monday is here!
Today, I would like to talk about an article I saw last week in the New York Times concerning the #Tesla #FSDBeta program.
The article was entitled "What Riding in a Self-Driving Tesla Tells Us About the Future of Autonomy": https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/11/14/technology/tesla-self-driving-flaws.html
We are already off to a bad start in terms of public safety because Tesla vehicles are not capable of "self-driving".
In fact, no consumer can purchase a self-driving vehicle today - perhaps ever.

» But his advice is one I often repeat to my students:
take a sheet of paper, divide it into two columns, and as objectively as you can list the pluses and minuses of each place.
Then sleep on it and in the morning go with your gut feeling.«

The #birdsite is currently a real time lab for #SystemsSafety and #resilience. The irony is that the thread to the system is a #cybernetic one. The application of a non-fitting #TheoryOfManagement created a #FeedForward self-amplifying #RaceToThebottom.
It's a safe bet that what happens these days will be subject to #management research for years to come, maybe even a classic.

Time for another #SystemsSafety Monday!
#OTA (Over-The-Air) software updates and remote #telemetry mechanisms for #SafetyCritical systems are an under-appreciated public safety hazard when unregulated - as they are today.
Some automakers already have these mechanisms available on existing vehicles and many more equipped vehicles are now coming to market.
Very soon, these mechanisms will be commonplace.

@annmlipton Exactly what I suspected…
Frankly, this makes Twitter a dead platform for technical discussions, particularly discussions around #SystemsSafety - of which competent voices were already hopelessly outnumbered in many cases.
I think Twitter is just going to devolve entirely into the lowest common denominator of commentary, in fact.
Let's talk #SystemsSafety and #Tesla #FSDBeta videos - and what these videos can _actually_ tell us about the reliability (safety) of this system.
Here is but one recent example of a FSD Beta video:

Hello everyone in the #fediverse!
A quick #introduction...
My name is Adam Cook and my primary interests include #Robotics, #Manufacturing, #Simulation and #SystemsSafety.
I am also very passionate about #Engineering and #Manufacturing #Education - as such, I am working on a personal project called ManufacturingOpen which I hope to reveal soon.
I recently moved from #Dallas to #Detroit after 4 years - mostly to go #CarFree once again.
Lastly, I am a #CatDad to Tiggy and Benny, as pictured!

@samabuelsamid I have not found any yet. :(
Some #ML experts though - not sure of any specific to #ads yet.
Perhaps in time... as I personally see the "$8 Twitter" as a dead platform for any #automotive or #ads #systemssafety discussions going forward - from a visibility standpoint at the very least.
Keeping my eyes peeled! :D
