We all slept well on last night’s sleeper train—seemingly the same couchette car used by European Sleeper, but a somewhat more recent model. (The only bummer was USB-A charging ports instead of regular plugs! We’ve switched everything to USB-C and were out of luck.) #Tågskryt #Snälltåget

What’s the price penalty for #SlowTravel for this trip?

When I made all the bookings in the third week of February the total for the ferry and main train journeys was around €1600 for three adults. This was coming in a bit cheaper when I first started planning but the high-speed special fares seem to go fast.

For comparison, direct flights to Rome with adequate bags and sane flying times were about €800.

A Monday sailing would be best BUT as it turns out, that Monday has no sailings at all to Ireland.

We had to be home by Tuesday night at the latest. Looked at hiring a car but there was no way to return it in Cherbourg on a Sunday.

The Eurostar to London and train to Holyhead was another possibility but that was another bridge too far for us.

So a few days later I checked again and this time there was a message saying that there would be major track works that weekend and it would be best to travel by early Saturday or leave it till Monday!

So what was my plan B? We really didn’t fancy an early morning departure on a 6 hour plus multi-change train trip to Cherbourg on the Sunday.

There were sailings on the Friday and Saturday that we could make but we had a hotel paid for in Paris until Sunday.

Just one leg of our journey remained to be booked: the train from Paris to Cherbourg to make the Sunday afternoon sailing back to Ireland.

Trainline only showed indirect journeys taking twice the normal time. So I looked at SNCF directly, same listings but also a message to say that more trains would be released shortly.

Reassured, I decided to leave it for a few days.

There’s also a TGV to Turin and Milan with a connection to Rome with a similar morning departure and total journey time.

I had intended to use this option for the return journey but the booking engines didn’t cooperate and we’ve ended up as Red Arrow people all the way.
